WDCs for solar-terrestrial physics and solid earth physics of the GC RAS: Plans of participation in the Electronic Geophysical Year

Abstract

Included into the international WDC system created in 1956 under decision of the International Council for Science, the World Data Centers for Solar-Terrestrial Physics and Solid Earth Physics (WDCs for STP and SEP) were responsible for collection, assured long-term storage of unique observation results received during the International Geophysical Year 1957–1958 and internationally accessible data set for scientists of all world. Rapidly changing technologies of registration, processing, visualization, storages and transfers of great volumes of information within 50 years means that the WDC system must introduce and use the new methods and approaches to work with data. Originally, the data were collected in an analogue form, later in an electronic form, and then the databases were created. With the conception of computer networks WDCs begin to create the global distributed system of geophysical information resources. Digital data, metadata, thematic databases and the program modules, opportunities of search providing to users and a choice of data on conditions in an interactive mode are presented in an easy approach on site of WDCs for STP and SEP. Following the main principles stated in the Declaration of the Electronic Geophysical Year, WDCs for STP and SEP provide to expand the access to data available in their archives, to increase the volume of web-based data, accessible to sharing, processing and visualization. On a website of the Centers the information about all available in WDCs for STP and SEP data is presented and the information on databases existing in another places is collected. The work is in full swing today to convert the data accumulated by the WDCs, related to the territory of Russia and its neighboring regions, from analog forms to electronic. These digital geoinformation resources are directly integrated into the data already available in an electronic form. On their basis GIS for territory of Russia is created and that will provide access to these data for users, in particular, in the removed interactive mode. It is proposed that the shell in the frame of GIS, including a set of adjustable algorithms for data processing and decision making on the basis of geostatistics and artificial intelligence methods will be created. The catalogue of metadata is simultaneously formed. The data translated in an electronic form will be included in the Space Physics Interactive Data Resource SPIDR, and also integrated into the global distributed system of WDCs information resources that will provide their active use in scientific researches.
